About Us

In 1988 I started working for an Accountant as his personal secretary, in the days where you used carbon in typewriters. In 1998 I met my husband who just happened to be an Accountant and so it made sense to start a bookkeeping practice and we haven’t looked back since.

I gained my diploma of Accounting some years ago yet it never ceases to amaze me at the amount of information that Bookkeepers need to access in order to deliver a good service over a range of industries which is why Uniting Bookkeepers has been so important to me over the years. When the idea first came to start an organisation to support bookkeepers in the local area there was no hesitation and again, I have never looked back at the decision to form our unique group.

It’s a great pleasure to be a Director of Uniting Bookkeepers and over the years we have seen many bookkeepers use our services and go onto become successful business women and men doing some pretty amazing things all over the world in their bookkeeping capacity. I love our mission statement and I believe it sums up for me why I do what I do for Uniting: Our mission is to create an environment in which people in the profession can feel respected, accepted, supported and valued.

Julie Ferguson

Julie Ferguson started Bookkeeping back in the 80’s. Her employer said “you’re a real natural with the bookwork, you should get some qualifications”, so after many years Julie graduated from TAFE NSW with a Diploma of Accounting. She then decided to take time off and went travelling and found in New Zealand a 5 five star hotel needed a Financial Controller. From there her world was her oyster and had various great contracts around the world in other industries and was famously the Financial Accountant for Euro Disney Merchandising, plus worked for one of the Coopers & Lybrand Directors in the UK, and the teams project was to ‘Dematerialise the London Stock Exchange’.

Coming home she still specialised in hospitality accounting, yet wanted a change and went on to publishing her own health and lifestyle magazine. This was very interesting and varied yet closed this business after 4 years because her forte was not in selling advertising. Whilst in the process of deciding what she wanted and needed to do, someone said “can you do this bookkeeping please”, yes of course and that was the start of the past 15 years.

Julie has in these 15 years gained her Advanced Diploma in Business Management, re-studied and gained a current Diploma of Accounting, BAS Agent and a Certificate in Training and currently is studying a Graduate in Public Accounting. Yes studying is one of her passions.

Her passions are AFL, Sailing, her family plus researching and being of assistance to anyone in this industry.

I started my working career with 30 years working in the tax and compliance side of the accounting industry. Since 2007 I’ve been providing pro-active commercially oriented consulting services to the small to medium sized business sector. In that time I’ve covered 100’s of business in just about every industry and niche that exists in the current Australian environment (plus a few over the years that no longer exist due to changes in technology or consumer trends).

The one absolutely common thread is that business owners need a quality bookkeeper to provide them with quality timely information. Far too many of them try to maintain their own books when they don’t have the skills or expertise to do so. Their own time is much better spent using their skills and expertise in their own area of excellence such as product development, sales or customer relationships. It is no accident that within a few months of starting work with me all my clients have an external bookkeeper. And to ensure that the client gets the right person with the right background experience and knowledge relevant to the client and their business I always use bookkeepers who are members of Uniting Bookkeepers. The ongoing support and mentoring Uniting Bookkeepers provides to its members ensures that they are always able to provide the highest quality work to my clients.

When the opportunity arose for me to join Uniting Bookkeepers as a Director, it was a great pleasure to accept.

My Dad had his own business, so after finishing school, he said while you’re deciding what to do why don’t you come and help me out at the shop. We had a contract bookkeeper who came each month, picked up the cheque/deposit books, bank statements and recorded these in a cashbook. After watching this for a couple of months I declared “I can do that”.

Dad not convinced sent me along to TAFE to do a Bookkeeper course, which I loved, I came first in my class, won an award and confirmed I had found something I was good at. Twenty two years later, Kalamazzo, Attache, Sybiz under my belt, we sold the business.

I worked part time with another business yet that gave little joy, so I bought a bookkeeping franchise business, and that was amazing. I have so many bookkeeping friends all over Australia. Gained invaluable knowledge, learned the importance of systems, procedures and was doing what I love to do.

In 2007 I commenced my new business and soon become a member of Uniting Bookkeepers, it felt like still being part of my franchise network but without the fees. I was continually telling Sue and Julie how amazing I thought they were, I was making suggestions here and there and in 2013 I become a Director of Uniting Bookkeepers. I also in 2014 gained my Diploma of Accounting which gave me a great understanding of what I am doing.

My passion is to share what I know and help others whenever I can.
